This single-gallery exhibition explores how the medium of photography often seems under threat of extinction as it is undergoing transformation. Throughout photography’s history, practitioners have lamented moments of crisis that often proved to be fruitful beginnings—catalysts for experimentation and reinvention. In works from the Loeb’s collection by Ansel Adams, Roe Ethridge, Judy Fiskin, Kusakabe Kimbei, Richard Prince, Marcia Resnick, and Lucas Samaras, among others, we find that the moments of crisis have ultimately expanded and complicated the technology, efficacy, and meaning of photography.
