Swift Hall

African American faculty, students, administrative assistants, researchers, and scholars have greatly contributed to a broader and more inclusive study and understanding of history at Vassar College. Associate Professor Emeritus Norman Hodges, PhD, was the first tenured Black professor in the History Department, located in Swift Hall, and the Africana Studies Program, located in New England Building. He began teaching at Vassar in 1969 and retired from the College in 1998. He taught courses on African American, African, and Caribbean history.
