The Vassar Community Gardens
The Vassar Community Gardens provides members with the opportunity to cultivate using organic methods. Local families or individuals grow their own fresh, organic vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers; build their knowledge of organic gardening; and increase their connection to the land and the community. Additionally, the gardens are used by Vassar College students and faculty to engage in experiential educational activities.
Gardeners lease plots each year and may renew annually (currently the price is $21 or $42/year). Plots are 10' x 20' and 20' x 20′. The gardens are open from dawn to dusk. Plots receive full sun. Water is provided. Gardeners are required to garden organically and to work at one community work event each season.
Management of the garden is carried out by volunteers, all of whom are garden members. The current garden coordinators are Myra Hughey and Carlie Graves. We manage all aspects of the gardens including registration and finances, maintenance of the garden space, fielding questions, and resolving issues within the gardens. We hope to make the Vassar College Community Gardens a better space for everyone.
2026 Orientation & Workdays
- Orientation: Saturday, April 4, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. New gardeners are assigned plots at this time. All are welcome!
- Work Days – One work day per season is required. These are community events where we work together to maintain the common areas of the gardens:
- Saturday, April 4, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Sunday, June 14, 8:00 – 10:00 a.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 19, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
