Professor of Biology Mark Schlessman and two of his students spent part of the summer at local herbaria, helping to ensure that scientists from all over the world can study plant species that have been growing in the region for the past 150 years.
Three members of the Class of 2023 have been named recipients of Vassar’s 2021 Wendy Rae Breslau Award for their service to the College and the local community.
Assistant Professor of Earth Science Laura Haynes and three students are spending the summer analyzing tiny fossils Haynes collected from the floor of the South Pacific. Their study of the Earth’s ecosystem more than 50 million years ago can shed some light on climate change in the future.
More than 60 incoming first-year students took part in this year’s Summer Immersions in the Liberal Arts program, hosted virtually by Vassar’s Engaged Pluralism Initiative.
Climate change and sustainability were the themes of this year’s Exploring College program. Students took a mini-course on the social and economic impacts of climate change, learned about Vassar’s sustainability goals and projects and also got some tips on how to navigate the college application process.
A performance of the hip-hop concept album Mexodus, co-created by actor-musicians Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, will be the first live professional theater event on campus since the start of the pandemic.
