After turning in your application, the Housing Office will get to work on matching you with a compatible roommate and house. These assignments will go out in late July or early August. Trust us when we say we know how eager you are to know who you’ll be living with and where, but please keep in mind that we’re also preparing for your arrival here during the summer and want to make sure we get everything just right for your new school home.

It would be a good idea to get your Vassar email set up as soon as possible. Not only do housing updates and your room assignments go to your Vassar email, but any information concerning your Student Fellow, class pre-registration, and things of that nature will end up in your Vassar inbox.

Your Vassar PO box number will be sent to your email with your housing assignment. You may begin to start sending things to yourself two weeks prior to Move-in Day.

Upon your arrival to campus, you will find your room key and ID card waiting for you in the lobby of your assigned house on Move-in Day.

Every room comes with a desk, a chair, closet/wardrobe space, and a small dresser for each person.

Because there is so much variability between the dorms and their beds, it is hard to specify the exact amount of space under the bed.

Most houses have twin XL mattresses and getting bed linens for twin XL beds is the best way to go as the worst case scenario still allows you to use them (you just have to do a little more tucking). Besides, many students opt to bring mattress pads/covers and having the extra material from twin XL sheets can be quite useful.

The ability for you to loft your bed depends on your house and the type of bed frame you have. Because of this high degree of variability within the houses and rooms, we recommend you wait to see what the situation is once you get to campus.

Bed risers are a convenient way to gain a couple extra inches under your bed. The only restriction we have on bed risers is that they cannot include outlets in them. We consider this a fire risk.

Vassar College became a smoke-free campus as of July 2015. Under no circumstances should anyone be smoking in the residence halls.

Each house has a designated space for laundry. In most houses this space is in the basement, except in Main where there are two laundry rooms, one on the third floor and the other on the second floor south.

These laundry machines can be used with your Vassar ID card and can only be paid for with VCash. Visit the Card Office to deposit more VCash on your ID card as needed.

On Move-in Day, there will be plenty of excited student fellows and volunteers waiting to direct you to the best parking lot to use for your house. There will also be signs posted along the roads.

Each room comes with an ethernet port, and the entire campus is wired for wireless internet. In addition, each house has a computer room that students have the ability to use.

Upon signing into Vassar’s eduroam wireless network (your username is your Vassar email address), you will be connected to the Vassar network and to the Internet. More information can be found on the Computing, IDs, & Phones FAQ and Computing and Information Services.

Though we believe that you are the best person to decide what you need to make your room feel like home, we’ve compiled a list of things you may want to bring.

Keep in mind, however, that Vassar does not provide storage space for your items outside of your room. You will also need to consider how you will store your things at the end of the school year (e.g., self-storage, driving things home, shipping, etc.)

There are a few things Vassar does not allow in house rooms, mostly for the safety of the students. View a list of some of the more well-known prohibited items and information about appliances. If you have questions about any item not on the list, we ask that you send an email to your house advisor or to contact Residential Life.

The Office of Residential Life is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm during the summer and would love to answer any questions you have about your soon-to-be home.
