Celebrating Scholarship

Ed Buie II, Assistant Professor of Astronomy, secured an ACCESS research grant for supercomputing time on the Anvil Supercomputer at Purdue University for his project in “Exploring the Impact of Varying Star-Forming Backgrounds and Turbulent Conditions on Non-Equilibrium Chemistry in Simulated Galactic Halos.”

Jingchen (Monika) Hu, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, received support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to advance research, application, and outreach in the area of statistical data privacy.

Lynn Christenson, Associate Professor of Biology, received a National Science Foundation award with her collaborators from George Mason University and USDA Forest Service, to support a workshop related to “Forest biodiversity responses to changing climate across the Americas: Synthesis of long-term ecological data.”

An article entitled,  “The Early Years of Nathaniel A. Owings: A Portrait of the Architect as a Storyteller,” by Nick Adams, Mary Conover Mellon Professor in the History of Architecture Emeritus, published in the Indiana Magazine of History, received the James H. Madison Prize for the best article to appear in 2021. 

Jan Cameron, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, is an assignee of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act Assignment (IPA) program and will serve in the coming year as a Program Director for the Analysis Program within the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS), Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Debra Elmegreen, Professor Emerita of Astronomy, is an awardee of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), operated by AURA. This grant will support the program “JWST probes Feedback in Emerging extrAgalactic Star clusTers: JWST-FEAST,” which will utilize MIRI and NIRCam infrared imaging via the James Webb Space Telescope.

Jingchen (Monika) Hu, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, and her collaborators from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and Duke University are recipients of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant award that will fund the two-year project Collaborative Research: Advancing Bayesian Thinking in STEM.

Charles Steinhorn, Professor Emeritus and Research Professor of Mathematics and Statistics, has secured a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York in continued support of the STEM Teaching Experiences for Undergraduates (TEU) program site in New York City, developed in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Barnard College.

Filmed in part on Vassar’s campus and featuring Höhn herself as a narrator, Sigrid Faltin’s 2021 production was the most-watched documentary on German Public TV (ARD) last year and will be honored in Berlin with the RIAS TV-Award in June 2022.
