Supreme Court on Military Transgender Ban

Dear all,

As you most likely know, the Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to allow a ban on transgender individuals serving in the military to go into place, while the challenge to this decision continues to make its way through lower courts.

In the face of this news, I wanted to publicly reinforce Vassar’s commitment to supporting transgender, non-binary, and other gender non-conforming students, faculty, administrators, and staff.

Let our community be a place of genuine care, compassion, acceptance, and support for one another, regardless of our many differences in race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity and expression, sexual identity, national origin, and social and economic backgrounds. I applaud the transgender, non-binary, and other gender non-conforming individuals on our campus for being true to themselves and advocating for equity in all areas, as we all deserve.

For those who are interested, there will be a Community Forum in the LGBTQ Center on Thursday, 1/24 from 4pm to 5:30pm. Join us to share your thoughts and reactions to the recent Supreme Court decision to revive the transgender ban for military service.

Danushi Fernando, Director for LGBTQ and Gender Resources, has office hours on Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm and Fridays from 10:30am to 12:30pm, and is also available by appointment.

Let us take care of each other as the semester begins and throughout the year.
