Collection Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, gift of William Rubin, 1960.4.2
Mary-Kay Lombino, Deputy Director and the Emily Hargroves Fisher ’57 and Richard B. Fisher Curator of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, secured a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation for the conservation of “Lyric,” a 1951 oil on canvas by the American artist Joan Mitchell (1925–1992). “Lyric” was donated to Vassar by William Rubin in 1960, during the tenure of the late seminal feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, Class of ’51, who was on the Vassar faculty in Art from 1952–1980. “Lyric” has been on continuous view for the last eight years, with the exception of periods of exhibition elsewhere in the Loeb’s galleries or on loan to other institutions. The Foundation’s grant will support cleaning and treatment of “Lyric” by an expert conservator to stabilize the painting and improve its visual appearance, restoring it in keeping with the artist’s original intent. As 2025 marks the artist’s centennial year, the Loeb will host an event to unveil the newly-restored painting, which occupies a prominent place in the mid-twentieth century gallery where it serves as an excellent example of abstract expressionism and a teaching tool for students and community visitors alike.
