James Romig’s The Distortion of Memory, an intimate concert-length work for solo classical guitar, was commissioned in 2024 by Trevor Babb and an international consortium of guitarists. The piece is the third and final work in a series of commensurate solo guitar works. Composed as four uninterrupted equal movements, the first movement follows specific procedures that generate its harmonic and rhythmic structure, while the three movements that follow are distorted recollections of the first—each successive reminiscence more nebulous and dreamlike than the last, reflecting the way our memories evolve and transform over time.
