Paris-New York: Modern Paintings in 19th and 20th Century. Masterworks from the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York
This full-color catalog was produced in conjunction with the 2008 exhibition, “Paris-New York: Modern Paintings in 19th and 20th Century. Masterworks from the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York”. Organized in partnership with the Yamagata Museum of Art in Yamagata, Japan, eighty-six works from the permanent collection travelled to five museums in Japan including the Shimane Art Museum, the Ishibashi Museum of Art, the Yamagata Museum of Art, the Fuchu Art Museum and the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum. The exhibition sought to create a deeper understanding of the spirit of the collection by exploring the strong holdings in American abstract expressionism. The selected works included nineteenth century American and French landscapes to provide the historical backdrop for the work of artists such as Jackson Pollock, Josef Albers, Philip Guston, and Mark Rothko. The catalog, completely illustrated in color also features works by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Paul Cézanne, Thomas Cole, Frederic-Edwin Church, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein. Catalog text is written in Japanese with English translations.
Exhibition: April 30–June 4, 2009
