WRITE. ACT. DIRECT.
Experience a theater training program like no other.
- DISCOVER your artistic process.
- CREATE your aesthetic.
- FIND your voice.
The Powerhouse Theater Training Program asks participants to engage with theater and theater makers in new and meaningful ways by living, breathing, and creating work with peers and professionals alike. Each participant will gain valuable insights and practical tools to take with them as they pursue a life in the theater.
Powerhouse Theater is a unique collaboration between Vassar College and New York Stage and Film. Projects that trace their developmental roots to Powerhouse include Tony award-winners Hamilton, Doubt, American Idiot, and Sideman, as well as the Pulitzer prize-finalists A 24-Decade History of Popular Music by Taylor Mac and Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves. Everyone who is part of this community is here to do “the work” with conversations and collaborations often continuing outside of the rehearsal room, during meals and late into the night. As one student said, “You can always sleep later.”
A Powerhouse Day
Students in the Training Program work alongside some of the country’s leading and emerging theater practitioners for five weeks, observing and participating in the process through which theater is made. A Powerhouse day includes morning and early afternoon classes. The core classes for all disciplines are acting, movement, and Soundpainting. Powerhouse afternoons and evenings consist of rehearsals, masterclasses, performances, crew calls, and much more.
