Robert DeMaria Jr., Professor of English on the Henry Noble MacCracken Chair, and Robert D. Brown, Professor Emeritus of Greek and Roman Studies, are co-editors of The Complete Poems of Samuel Johnson, published in June 2024 by Routledge for the Longman Annotated English Poets series.

At over 1,000 pages, this edition—the first of its kind in 50 years—presents all the poetry of Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) alongside extensive commentary. The volume spans the entirety of Johnson’s verse, including satire, ode, elegy, verse drama, and verse prayer in chronological order, from his early days in Lichfield to his career as an author in London. In so doing, the volume constitutes a new intellectual biography of Johnson. The project was supported by Vassar College through the MacCracken and Turner Funds. The Longman Annotated English Poets series, founded by F.W. Bateson, has been until now an exclusively British project. This is the first volume to have an American editor (Bob), though it also, reassuringly, has a British editor (Rob).
