Press Release

Nuclear Disarmament Advocate to Speak at Vassar

Internationally renowned lawyer and peace activist Jonathan Granoff, Vassar class of 1970, will receive the Alumnae/i Association of Vassar College (AAVC) Distinguished Achievement Award during a program on March 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Hall, Room 300, on the Vassar campus.

Prior to receiving the award, Granoff will engage in a dialog on his work in international relations and nuclear disarmament with former NBC and CBS News correspondent Chip Reid, Vassar class of 1977. The event is free and open to the public and participants may attend in person or via Zoom.

Granoff is President of the Global Security Institute and Permanent Observer for the International Anti-Corruption Academy to the United Nations. He is an attorney, author, and international advocate whose work focuses on advancing the rule of law, international security, anti-corruption, and the threats posed by nuclear weapons.

Amy Pullman, chair of the AAVC selection committee, noted that “Jonathan stood out because of his ceaseless work for international peace. His role in the United Nations and on the Taskforce on Nuclear Nonproliferation is all the more important given the heightened tensions among the nuclear superpowers as evidenced by the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.”

During a 2020 Zoom ceremony in which Granoff was presented with a lifetime achievement award from the American Bar Association’s International Section, renowned anthropologist Jane Goodall praised Granoff’s dogged idealism: “Jonathan is one of those people who tackles what seems to be impossible,” she said. “So many people don’t believe that it will ever be possible to have a world of peace, to have a world without nuclear weapons. But Jonathan has never given up.”

Granoff is also the recipient of the Rutgers University School of Law’s Arthur E. Armitage Distinguished Alumni Award. He serves on numerous governing and advisory boards, including: the nonpartisan security group Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons of the United Religions Initiative, Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, Jane Goodall Institute, and Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament.
