“On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Critical Theory” by Amy Allen

Location:

Rockefeller Hall, Room 200

Amy Allen, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Penn State University and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Advancement, will present a lecture on the role of historical inquiry in critical theory.

In her talk, Allen distinguishes three ways of understanding the value of history for critical theory and situates Rahel Jaeggi’s recent work on progress and regression in that broader framework. Following a critical examination of Jaeggi’s Marxist-Hegelian perspective, she defends a genealogical alternative for how history can inform critique without relying on teleological accounts of progress.

Sponsored by the Philosophy Department. This is Part of the Philosopher’s Holiday Lecture series
