Prof. Katie Acosta discusses how queer stepfamilies navigated both the legal landscape and the challenges of “plural parenting” in the context of marriage equality litigation. This talk is based on Prof. Acosta’s qualitative interviews with over 50 lesbian, bisexual, queer, or transgender parented families about their experiences with family courts throughout the United States.

Prof. Acosta is a Professor of Sociology at Georgia State University. She is the author of Amigas y Amantes: Sexually Nonconforming Latinas Negotiate Family (Rutgers University Press, 2003) and Queer Stepfamilies: The Path to Social and Legal Recognition (New York University Press, 2021).
