Arabic Fiction-in-Translation: A Woman-Centered View of Twentieth Century Lebanon

Author Iman Humaydan will speak about the writing process and translation of her IPAF (International Prize of Arabic Fiction) long-listed novel Songs for Darkness. She will then read excerpts from her novel in English and field questions from the audience. Michelle Hartman, Professor of Arabic Literature at McGill University, will give a presentation about translating Arabic fiction written by women into English; she will describe the translation process and overcoming linguistic and cultural challenges. Professor Hartman will also address her collaboration with Iman on the translation of Songs for Darkness.
