The C. Mildred Thompson Lecture Series: “Adelaide Zaire's Catholic Journey: Slavery, Sexual Violence, and Salvation in a French Eighteenth-Century Port City”

Professor Hardwick, the John E. Green Regents Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin, is an international scholar whose work sits at the intersection of legal, economic, social, and family/gender history in early modern France. Her groundbreaking books include Sex in an Old Regime City: Young Workers and Intimacy in France, 1660–1879 (2020) and Family Business: Litigation and the Political Economy of Daily Life in Early Modern France (2009). She is also the founding director of UT’s Institute for Historical Studies and currently holds a Solmsen Fellowship at the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her current book project is An Intimate History of Racial Capitalism in an Eighteenth-Century Slaving Port.
