Images of Anxiety and Hope: The Visual Narratives of the Fundraising Nuns of Kumano in Early Modern Japan

An illustrated lecture by Talia J. Andrei, Professor of Art History and East Asian Studies, Wesleyan University

This lecture will focus on visual narratives spun by the Kumano nuns for fundraising purposes and the paintings they used, portable representations of sacred sites called sankei mandara or “pilgrimage mandalas.” This event is being held in conjunction with the Focus Gallery Exhibition, Off the Market: Gift Economies and Art at the Loeb, on view through January 19, 2023.
