Falling Behind in a Group of People Walking

Feb. 22, 2023, 5:00 p.m.
Location:

Alumnae House Living Room

A Dialogue on Art and Disability with Tatlock Fellow Finnegan Shannon and Gordon Hall, Assistant Professor of Art.

Who sets the pace at which we live and work? What is the standard of productivity and success? Who has the power and safety to challenge these ableist expectations? In this interdisciplinary event, artist and Tatlock fellow Finnegan Shannon shares their artwork, and engages in conversation with Assistant Professor of Art Gordon Hall. This image-based conversation will consider the politics of slowness, refusal of norms of productivity, and the value of contemplation in our lives and work.

Finnegan Shannon’s recent work includes Anti-Stairs Club Lounge, an ongoing project that gathers people together who share an aversion to stairs; Alt Text as Poetry, a collaboration with Bojana Coklyat that explores the expressive potential of image description; and Do You Want Us Here or Not, a series of benches and cushions designed for exhibition spaces. Their work has been supported by a Wynn Newhouse Award, an Eyebeam fellowship, and grants from Art Matters Foundation and Canada Council for the Arts.

Gordon Hall is an Assistant Professor of Art at Vassar who teaches sculpture. His work includes sculpture, performance, and writing, and he has had exhibitions at MIT List Visual Arts Center, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Socrates Sculpture Park, The Hessel Museum, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Renaissance Society, EMPAC, and Temple Contemporary, among many others.

The Tatlock Fellowship in Multidisciplinary Studies is a flexible residency program, designed to strengthen and deepen the engagement of faculty within Vassar’s multidisciplinary programs. It was established through a gift from the Mellon Foundation to honor the contributions of Anne McNiff Tatlock ’61, former Chair of the foundation’s Board of Directors.
