The National Votes for Women Trail, a national public/private initiative, has selected some 2,000 sites across the country of significance to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. One of these is the site of the 1908 “Suffrage in the Cemetery” Rally held in Poughkeepsie. There, a group of Vassar students led by Inez Milholland, class of 1909, defied the College’s ban on suffrage activities to hold an event at the cemetery across the street, at which famous suffragists, including Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Harriot Stanton Blatch, and labor organizer Rose Schneiderman spoke.
