The Department of Hispanic Studies has a twofold purpose: to teach the skills required to understand, speak, read, and write the Spanish language and to guide students in an exploration of the literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America.  Except for the occasional bilingual seminar on Latino/a studies, courses are taught in Spanish.

In addition to formal coursework, the department sponsors a weekly Spanish table in the dining hall designed for informal, conversational practice as well as a Hispanic film series. Both activities are open to all students and are directed by the Hispanic studies language fellow.
