The C. Mildred Thompson Lecture: “The Space-Time of Wartime Displacement in Modern China and Taiwan”
Join us for a lecture with Rebecca Nedostup, Associate Professor of History and Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Brown University. The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) significantly transformed everyday awareness and experiences of China’s geographic boundaries. This lecture expands upon this pivotal period to understand how large-scale displacement, both within and outside the borders of China and Taiwan between the 1930s and 1950s, produced different scales of refugee time and space. These were co-constituted alongside the major and minor decisions that shaped paths of flight and places of resettlement; visions of lost homes, kin, and comrades; and attempts to reconstruct a moral world that may or may not have coincided with the confines of the nation-state.
Sponsored by the History Department, this event is free and open to the public.
