During Women’s History Month, Vassar College salutes Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper ’28—alumna, professor emerita, and computer science pioneer. Hopper’s recent posthumous honors include the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the naming of Grace Murray Hopper College at Yale University.

Twenty-three Vassar sophomores—a record number—are applying for admission to the dual degree program at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering. The successful candidates will spend their junior year at Thayer, return to Vassar to complete their bachelor’s, and then spend a fifth year at Thayer to earn a bachelor’s in engineering.

Pete Malinowski ’06, Executive Director of the Billion Oyster Project, is reinvigorating the aquatic life in New York City’s waterways by reintroducing a keystone species—the oyster—into the East River and beyond, and he’s doing so with the help of students from the New York Harbor School.

Working under the auspices of Vassar’s Undergraduate Research Summer Institute, George Whiteside ’18 and Dylan Horowitz ‘19 adapted an impulsivity test so that it can be administered not only on smart phones but also on smart watches and voice-activated virtual assistant devices such as Google Assistant.
