How Vassar Sees the WorldAnnual International Photo Contest Winners Announced
Stunning landscapes and thought-provoking images of people across the globe captured the top prizes in Vassar’s 15th Annual International Photo Contest. Sponsored by the Office of International Services, this year’s contest drew entries from nearly 150 students, administrators, faculty, staff, and alumnae/i. Winners were announced December 9.
The annual contest was launched in 2005, the year the Office of International Services was created, as a way to spotlight the talents of international students. It has since been expanded to include entries from anyone in the Vassar community. The only criterion: the photo must depict a scene outside the United States.
The winning photos in the “Landscape” and “People and Culture” categories were chosen by a panel of judges composed of students, administrators, and faculty. Winners in the “People’s Choice” category were chosen by a vote of current Vassar students.
Andrew Meade, Director of International Services and Assistant Dean of Student Growth and Engagement, said he is consistently impressed by the quality and variety of the entries. “The contest was conceived as a way of displaying the cross-cultural perspectives of our students and I’m always struck by not only the quality of the entries but by all the places people in the Vassar community have been,” Meade said.
This year’s winners
Landscape category: “Sunrise in the Dark” by Jacy Sun ’20, “Swayambhunath” by Will Shaffer ’23, and “Sunrise Over Luxor” by Kevin Ros ’20.
People and Culture category: “Caught” by Yagmur Konuk ’23, “Dio, Listening” by Karin Halverson ’20, and “The Merchants” by Kevin Ros ’20.
People’s Choice category: “Vanilla Valley” by Eilif Ronning ’20, “Tsingy” by Eilif Ronning ’20, and “Whisper Under the Sunset” by Alex Kim ’21.
