A Vassar Trifecta

Saturday is a big day for Vassar athletics. The field hockey, women’s soccer and women’s rugby teams are competing in post-season tournaments, starting with games Saturday afternoon in three separate locations.

The Vassar field hockey team celebrates a victory.

The field hockey team, which is ranked fifth in the nation and won its first Liberty League championship last week, is competing in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time. The Brewers (17-1) will face The College of New Jersey at 2 p.m. Saturday on the campus of Middlebury (VT) College.

Brenna McMannon ’21 and her teammates are preparing for their first-ever NCAA playoff game.

The women’s soccer team, also competing in the NCAA tournament for the first time, will play Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a first-round game on the campus of Amherst (MA) College. The game will start at 1:30 p.m. Vassar (9-7-1) lost in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs but secured an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament on the strength of road victories over two nationally-ranked teams. The Brewers defeated #7 William Smith and #15 Rochester Institute of Technology during Liberty League play. MIT won the New England Men’s and Women’s Athletic Conference championship and is ranked 24th in the nation.

The women’s rugby team is seeking to take the first step toward a fourth straight trip to the Final Four of the USA Rugby Fall Nationals when it hosts the University of Delaware in the Round of 32 at 1 p.m. at Vassar Farm. The Brewers won all 10 of their games this fall, outscoring their opponents by a margin of 574 to 80.

Halle Hutchinson '21 and her teammates are ready to face the University of Delaware on Saturday.

The Athletics Department has arranged viewing parties for the field hockey and soccer games Saturday afternoon. Screens will be set up in the Gordon Commons dining center, and everyone in the Vassar community is invited to attend.
