The extra $50 a month his Grandma May secretly saved for his college expenses transformed the Vassar experience for Eric Marcus ’80. Now he’s honoring her quiet generosity with a planned gift to support student travel for research.
Honoring Tradition, Inspiring Tomorrow
At the first meeting of Vassar’s Board of Trustees in 1861, founder Matthew Vassar made a bold and visionary pledge, committing a significant portion of his estate to what he called his “magnificent enterprise.” When he died in 1868, his will entrusted both the College and the remainder of his fortune to its endowment. This was an enduring act of faith that secured the future of the institution he so passionately believed in.
A Community of Visionaries
Today, alums, parents, and friends who have made similar commitments to Vassar’s future through planned gifts and estate provisions are recognized as members of the Matthew Vassar Legacy Society. Like the College’s founder, these generous individuals help to ensure Vassar’s mission “to make accessible the means of a thorough, well-proportioned and liberal education” that inspires each individual to lead a purposeful life.
Members of the Matthew Vassar Legacy Society share a deep commitment to Vassar’s students. Their legacy gifts, such as bequests, charitable trusts, and charitable gift annuities, make a profound impact on all aspects of the campus community.
“These gifts help students gain insight and confidence through lively dialogue and diverse perspectives. Including Vassar in your will means you think of the College like family.”
– Katherine “Gig” Babson ’69, Gift Planning Chair, Fearlessly Consequential Campaign
Legacy gifts are more than financial provisions; they are enduring expressions of loyalty, vision, and belief in the College’s capacity to shape lives and serve the world.
