This year, Vassar’s Advanced Debates in Urban Studies class spent spring break in Detroit talking to community activists, entrepreneurs, artists, developers, and more. With its complex and contradictory history, the city proved a perfect case study. Inspired by the class, VQ followed in many of its footsteps to bring readers a snapshot of the city today. We also profile several alumnae/i who live in and around the city, including attorney Sharon Dolente ’96; Martha Firestone Ford ’46, majority owner of the Detroit Lions; and GM employee James Stuntz ’05.
