Winter 2016 Volume 112 Issue 1

Opening the Bridge

After three years of construction—and nine years of planning—Vassar's new Bridge for Laboratory Sciences opened for classes on the first day of the spring semester, January 27, 2016. What was it like to finally inhabit Vassar's most eagerly anticipated building?

Saving the Artifacts of Science

What began nearly five years ago with a casual conversation on a bus has blossomed into a celebration of 150 years of scientific achievements. Teaching tools, photographs, and stories chronicling Vassar's rich history as a leader in virtually all fields of science will be on display in the college's four science buildings.

Ruth Starr Rose: Illuminating African American Life in 1930-'40s Maryland

Ruth Starr Rose, Class of 1910, illuminated African American life in 1930-'40s Maryland with her paintings. Instead of painting the Chesapeake Bay's shores, Rose focused on the people—farmers, fishermen, oyster shuckers, cooks, gardeners, and other—who helped fuel the area's economy. The first comprehensive presentation of her work is taking place in Baltimore.

Criminal Justice System on Trial

The United States leads the world in rates of incarceration, with 2.3 million individuals behind bars. Ezekiel (Zeke) Edwards ’95, director of the ACLU’s Criminal Law Reform Project, and professors Laurence Steinberg ’74 and Abby Baird ’91 are working to reform the nation’s criminal justice system.
