In Search of Sources

It’s a Vassar mantra: “Go to the source.” Credited to Lucy Maynard Salmon, who was hired in 1887 to establish Vassar’s history department, the phrase has long guided the way teaching is done here at Vassar.

Dynamic Ideas on Population

Ask Laurie Schwab Zabin ’46 how many people are in her family, and she’ll tell you, “It depends on how you count them.” She has three children from her first marriage, but she also includes the children her late husband brought into her second marriage, all of whom now have children of their own.

International Diplomacy: Alumnae/i in the Foreign Service

One day, soon after arriving in Niamey, Niger, to begin her posting as United States ambassador to the country, Jennifer Baswick Ward ’65 drove to the downtown neighborhood with her eight-year-old daughter Jacqueline. What stood out most to Jacqueline was the dust.
