Vassar in the Funny Books

If we had childhood ambitions to write or draw comics, most of us abandoned them in elementary school. But five Vassar graduates actually spend part of their days writing, drawing, or editing comics and indulging in the medium they grew up with. They have in common a clear passion for comics but think quite differently about their jobs.

Learning on Lagonav

When Christine Low ’83 first visited the island of Lagonav, about 30 miles offshore from Haiti’s Port-au-Prince, there were only a few functioning private trucks on the island, several motorcycles, two public telephones, and no plumbing or paved roads.

Changing of the Board: Richard Van Demark '77

In 1982, a 27-year-old Vassar graduate named Richard Van Demark ’77 was asked to join the prestigious Vassar Board of Trustees. How he was tapped to be a “young trustee” remains a mystery to Van Demark; but he eagerly accepted the position. This year, after 22 years of service he will retire from the board.
