Journalism in the 21st Century

In April 2004, four distinguished alumnae/i participated in a panel discussion as part of a Vassar regional program. The panel discussion, with an audience of more than 100 members of the Vassar community, was held at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was moderated by Professor of Sociology William Hoynes.

Commencement 2004

“I ask you to recognize that you are entering the broader world at a critical historical moment, one that can and will determine if America can regain its long-held legitimacy as a beacon of hope, of individual possibility, of democracy, and of moral authority for the rest of humankind. This will not happen without your attention, without your commitment, without your determination to take the time within your busy days to think behind what is so facilely presented to you.…The world is yours to reclaim and, we hope, remake.”

It Takes a Community

For twenty years, the Exploring Transfer summer program has given community college students the chance to live and learn at Vassar College, rigorously preparing them for transfer to four-year institutions, including Vassar.

Photoactivism: Olive Robbins Pierce '45

Urban teenagers, Maine fishermen, and Iraqi children may not seem to have a lot in common, but they do for Olive Robbins Pierce ’45. A photographer who specializes in documentary photography, Pierce has a desire to combat stereotypes about marginalized people through her work. “I do it because I’m drawn by something—by ignorance,” she said recently.

Reunion 2004

For three spirited days in June, the Vassar campus was home to alumnae/i hailing from Hawaii, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, Oregon, the U.K., Denmark, Kansas, Saudi Arabia, and, of course, New York City. They played music, drank martinis, watched fireworks, danced in the Mug, and visited with old friends.
