Summer 2000 Volume 96 Issue 3

Madam Impresario: Susan Wadsworth '58

Violinist Pinchas Zukerman; pianists Murray Perahia, Emanuel Ax, and Ruth Laredo; soprano Dawn Upshaw: in the intensely competitive world of classical music, these are household names. They also have more in common than a high standard of artistry, perseverance, and luck.

Pure Oxygen: Geraldine Laybourne '69

Geraldine Bond Laybourne '69 knows the value and rewards of listening. In the 1980s and 1990s, she listened to kids who told her what they wanted on TV and then transformed a fledgling cable network with mediocre programming into an $8 billion media empire with a reputation for innovative shows for kids.

Rocking the Bronx: Adam Green '95

Standing on the corner of 174th Street and Townsend Avenue in the Bronx, looking over the Cross Bronx Expressway and its noisy, racing streams of auto and truck traffic, it's hard to think about boats.

Three Young Composers, Key of Vassar

Elizabeth Walsh '90 didn't follow the typical career path of a Vassar music major.
