Vassar Yesterday
Vassar’s first class of ’00 comprised 126 women who graduated with very different expectations than will the some 600 women and men in the current ’00. A 1910 alumnae directory recorded only three members of the class as being both married and employed: one as a member of the New York Bar, one as a missionary in Turkey with her husband, and one as a researcher for an encyclopedia. The unmarried included 25 teachers, a librarian, and an observatory “computer.” The vast majority were married and not employed for pay outside the home.
