Vassar athletes kicked off the fall season last month with notable performances at home and on the road:

On September 3, men’s and women’s cross country teams defended their titles at the annual Vassar Invitational meet. Both squads secured first place team finishes in a field of 10 teams. The men defended their title for the ninth year in a row; the women for the sixth year in a row. Women and men both placed five runners in the top 10 individual results.

On September 10, women’s rugby won their season opener in dominating fashion, with a 55-15 win over RPI. One week later, on Sep 18, they advanced to 2-0 for the season with an equally impressive 71-5 victory over Hofstra. On the men’s side, Vassar also emerged victorious, shutting out Hofstra in a 64-0 victory.

On September 13, men’s soccer defeated their cross-river rival, SUNY New Paltz, for the first time since 2007, with a 3-0 victory. One week later they lost to top-ranked Christopher Newport University, but are still riding a strong early season, with a record of 5-2-1. Meanwhile, on September 17 women’s soccer earned consecutive wins 3-1 over NYU and 6-1 over Elms College, improving their season record to 4-3.

On September 14, women’s volleyball snapped a five-match losing streak against Williams with a 3-0 sweep.

Andrew Guzick

On September 16, men’s tennis swept Bard 9-0 in its first and only dual match of the fall season. In singles play, the Brewers failed to drop a single set. At the Trinity Invitational, junior Andrew Guzick (pictured), ranked No. 8 nationally, reached the finals of the A Flight singles tournament, and paired with his brother, senior Ben Guzick, to win the A Flight doubles tournament. The women have proven equally strong. Earlier in the month, they put in a great showing at Williams’s Lindsay Morehouse ’00 Invitational, with three freshmen earning victories over players from other strong programs. More recently, on September 26 freshman Ava Sadeghi won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships, winning nine matches in three days. She becomes the program's first player to advance to the singles tournament of the ITA Small College Championships, which will be held in Mobile, Alabama, October 13–16.

That same day, women’s field hockey shut out Mercy College 2-0, improving their season record to a winning 3-2.

On September 19, women’s golf finished sixth out of 11 at the NYU invitational, tied with host New York University. Junior Nicole Bronson led the Brewers with a 78 and an 83 for a 36-hole score of 161, good for a ninth place tie in the individual standings.
