Michael Korda, writer and former editor-in-chief at the publishing house Simon & Schuster, will read from his most recent biography, Hero: The Life and Legend of Lawrence of Arabia, at the Vassar College Bookstore at 5 pm on Friday, December 3. Korda, a resident of Dutchess County, was editor-in-chief at Simon & Schuster for over 35 years, and during his time there oversaw the publishing of works by authors including Jacqueline Susann, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. He has written a number of bestselling books ranging from biography to memoir to historical nonfiction, including Ike: An American HeroCat People, andCharmed LivesRead a review of Hero.

Assistant professor of physics David T. Bradley will discuss the acoustical design of theaters on Thursday, December 9, in a talk titled “To Hear or Not to Hear: the Acoustics of Drama Theaters.” Taking place in the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film’s Martel Theater at 7:30 pm, Bradley’s talk will address the effect of the architectural design of performing arts spaces on the way we hear spoken-word performances, using the acoustics of the Martel Theater to illustrate his points. The lecture is presented in conjunction with the release of the book Acoustical Design of Theatres for Drama Performance: 1985-2010, of which Bradley is a lead editor.
