Stephen Hankins ’85, P’13, P’17

Steve Hankins ’85 joined the Board of Trustees in July 2017. He served as a trustee previously from 1995-2007.

Steve is a trial attorney based in San Francisco, California. He currently specializes in intellectual property and labor and employment disputes. He has tried cases for companies and individuals in many substantive areas. He is a partner of Riley Safer Holmes & Cancila, a firm he founded in 2016. Prior to that, Steve worked at Schiff Hardin (2007-2016), Morgenstein & Jubelirer (1994-2007), and Heller Ehrman (1991-1994). Throughout the years, he has served as practice group leader, office managing partner, executive committee member, and managing partner.

Steve has volunteered for Vassar since he graduated. He led the leadership gift committees for his 10th and 25th reunions, was a member of multiple campaign steering committees, served as co-chair of the Pyramid Society for former Vassar trustees, founded and co-chaired the Parents Committee, and has served as AAVC Director and Vice-President. In addition, Steve has volunteered for the ACLU, the YMCA of San Francisco, and San Francisco Friends School.

Steve lives in Belvedere, California with his wife Laura Jones (Bard ’87). Their two daughters, Maggie and Phoebe, attended Vassar graduating in 2013 and 2017. His daughters were the fifth generation of Steve’s family to attend Vassar, following his great-grandmother, Blanche Brumbach ’(19)06, grandmother, Lydia Spitzer ’30, mother, Jenny Rheinfrank ’61, sister, Lydia Hankins ’89, as well as many aunts and cousins including former trustee Sally Lyman Rheinfrank ’63. Steve is an avid endurance athlete, competing in Ironman distance races.
