On March 28th at 5:00PM in Taylor Hall 203, Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim will deliver the Frederic C. Wood Lecture, “Religion, Ecology and the ‘Journey of the Universe.’” We are living in times of immense challenge on every front—social, political, ecological, and spiritual. As Thomas Berry suggested, we need a new story to reorient and ground ourselves to meet these challenges. Drawing on the discoveries of modern science as well as the wisdom of the world's cultures, the Emmy award winning film Journey of the Universe tells a compelling story that reveals our profound connection to the web of life and our role in protecting it. At this lecture we will screen this hour-long film and have a question and answer session with the two Yale scholars who wrote and directed it, Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim.
Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim teach at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Yale Divinity School. Tucker specializes in East Asian religions, especially Confucianism, and Grim writes about indigenous traditions. They have written or edited many books, including Ecology and Religion, The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Ecology (2017), and Thomas Berry: A Biography (Columbia University Press, 2019).
Sponsored by the Department of Religion. Co-sponsored by the Program of Environmental Studies and Religious and Spiritual Life and Contemplative Practices.
