Courses and Requirements

Students interested in studying the global nineteenth century should enroll in GNCS/HIST/CLCS 150, “Revolution, Evolution, and the Global Nineteenth Century.” Team-taught and featuring weekly guest lecturers, this innovative, core course introduces students to a global, multidisciplinary approach to the period, one that is not limited by national, regional, or imperial boundaries. In addition to GNCS/HIST/CLCS 150, students can select courses and seminars that focus on history, literary studies (in any language), art, music, philosophy, religion, technology, and science. The program also encourages students to study foreign languages at Vassar in order to work toward the goal of working with original sources and developing a more nuanced global understanding. The major culminates in a multidisciplinary senior thesis, written under the guidance of two faculty members from different disciplines. Students may also elect a correlate sequence.

Because the concentration incorporates courses originating within the program as well as a wide range of courses from other programs and departments, students wishing to concentrate in Global Nineteenth-Century Studies should consult with the program director as early as possible.
