The department offers courses that explore literary forms, literary periods and movements, literary theory and criticism, and creative writing. English majors are required to take two courses in literature written before 1800, one course in literature written before 1900, and one course that focuses on issues of race, gender, sexuality, or ethnicity. A thesis is not required, but is an option for those wishing to pursue independent work in their senior year. In addition to the major, the department offers seven correlate sequences.
