Thaddeus Gesek, associate professor of drama, unveiled his use of six-pack plastic rings in a set design for a production of S. I Hsiung’s Lady Precious Stream (1934). The production, directed by Clinton J. Atkinson, "will attempt," said The Miscellany News, "to create its own environment using contemporary materials in a style based on ancient Chinese theater traditions." Members of the campus community donated some 10,000 sets of plastic six-pack rings, with which Gesek and his crew "ingeniously created a 'plastic atmosphere'...to make costumes, props and an intricate backdrop curtain. Beards, riding whips, etc. were made of strips of film; this, coupled with the expertly tie-dyed cloth costuming and colorful makeup gave the players the right kind of exoticism." The Miscellany News
