Steven Caras: A Dancer Captures Dance
Exhibition: Sep 23–Oct 18, Main Building, Palmer Gallery
Lecture: Sep 25, Kenyon Hall, Frances Daly Fergusson Dance Theater, 7:00pm
Artist Reception: Sep 26, Main Building, Palmer Gallery, 5:00–7:00pm
The photographic work of acclaimed dancer and photographer Steven Caras takes center stage this September, as Vassar hosts an exhibition of his work and an artist reception and lecture. All three events are open to the public. Mikhail Baryshnikov said Caras “has an intuitive feel for dancers and the way they move. This understanding is evident in his photography … he captures the outer workings of the body while revealing glimpses of the dancer’s inner life.” As part of his lecture—“Survival Instinct: A Dancer’s Story of Self-Reinvention”—Caras will show PowerPoint slides and talk about his personal and professional milestones and setbacks, from being one of New York City Ballet’s youngest recruits to becoming its ultimate image-maker. The Steven Caras Residency at Vassar College is presented by the Dance Department and The Palmer Gallery; sponsored by the Dean of Faculty Office, and the Media Studies and Art departments; and conceived and underwritten by Margaret Wellington ’69 and Robin Woodard ’69.
